Tottenham are confident they can sign Heung-min Son to a new contract.
Peter O’Rourke, who writes for Football Insider in the United Kingdom and is well versed in Tottenham’s insider information, reported on January 1 (KST) that ‘Tottenham are confident of agreeing a new contract with captain Son Heung-min at the end of the season. Spurs’ owners have held talks with Son’s camp and all parties are now hopeful of reaching an agreement.
Son Heung-min’s contract with Tottenham runs through the 2024-2025 season. With the end of the season just over two months away, Tottenham’s top priority is to re-sign Son Heung-min. Tottenham are keen to re-sign Son Heung-min before the summer transfer window opens.
This is to avoid a repeat of last summer’s Harry Kane situation. In the summer transfer window, Spurs were forced to sell Kane, who only had one year left on his contract. They couldn”t afford to let a player of Kane”s caliber leave on a free transfer, so even if they didn”t want to sell him, they let him go to Bayern Munich.
Son Heung-min also has one year left on his contract if he doesn’t sign a new deal before the summer transfer window opens. Tottenham have a clause in his contract that allows them to extend it for another year, but there will be plenty of speculation about his future. To prevent this from happening, it’s imperative to re-sign Son Heung-min.
Tottenham and Son are already in contract talks, but it’s unlikely that a deal will be reached before the end of the season. It’s not that negotiations are stalled, it’s just that it’s the middle of the season and Son is focused on the team’s performance. Tottenham still have hopes of finishing fourth in the league and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League (UCL).
‘Son’s current contract with Spurs is set to expire in June 2025, but the club have an option to extend it for another 12 months,’ O’Rourke said. Last month we said that a new deal was unlikely to be signed until the summer as Son and Tottenham are focused on finishing the season in a bid to qualify for the UCL.
With the likelihood of Son and Tottenham signing a new contract now seemingly assured, attention turns to the length and size of the deal. While it’s unknown how long the 1992-born player will continue to play, there is speculation that the new deal could be the last of his career, depending on the length of the contract.
A four-year extension, like the one he signed in 2021, would keep Son a Spurs player until 2028. After the 2027-2028 season, Son will be in his mid-30s. This would be the perfect age for 먹튀검증 him to finish his career at Tottenham.
The size of the contract is also of interest. He’s currently the second-highest paid player on the Spurs roster, but he’s still outside the top 30 in the league as a whole. That’s a contract that doesn’t fit the player who is one of the most competitive players in the league. It will be interesting to see if Tottenham will offer the EPL’s highest salary to keep Kane.
‘This will be a huge package that reflects the value and importance of Son Heung-min to the club,’ O’Rourke said. ‘It would be a huge bonus for the club to be able to hold on to a player who has been so good for them for so many years, and with Son turning 32 in July, he will essentially be committed to staying at Tottenham for the rest of his career, or at least the rest of his prime,’ O’Rourke added.
