Cho Kyu-sung (25-Midtjylland) wrapped up the first half of the season with his first multi-goal game since joining the Danish league. The steady stream of goals has helped the men’s national soccer team’s prospects for next year’s Asian Cup.
Cho Kyu-sung scored two goals in a 5-1 home win over Viborg in the 2023-2024 Superliga 17th round at MCH Arena in Herning, Denmark on Friday. With eight goals so far this season in the league, he’s up to 3rd in the league’s Top Scorers list. He added two assists to his tally from the previous matches to reach double-digit offensive points this season. Including his goal in the UEFA EuropaConference League (UECL) qualifiers, he has now scored nine goals in official matches this season.
With the win, Mittwylan go into the winter break in good spirits, having finished the first half with 36 points, one point ahead of second-placed Brønnby (35 points). The league resumes next February with a round 18 away match against Brønby.
Cho Kyu-sung opened the scoring after just three league games, showing off his fixer instincts by scoring at key moments. His first goal came in first-half stoppage time with the score 0-1. He calmly converted a penalty kick (PK) after being fouled by the opposing goalkeeper. In the 21st minute of the second half, with the score 3-1, he took a pass from Christopher Olsen in the left penalty area and shot non-stop, rattling the opposite net.
Football stats site Footmob gave Cho a 9.1 rating, the highest for either team.
Following his multi-header performance against Ghana in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Cho received offers from a number of overseas teams, including German Bundesliga side Mainz. However, he didn’t go abroad in the winter transfer window and started the season with K League 1 side Jeonbuk Hyundai. His intermittent goalscoring at the start of the season caused some concern, but he found his stride again and then moved to Mitwylan, where his form improved. If he finishes the rest of the season well, he could be in line to make the big leagues.
His consistent performances for Mitwylan have cemented him as a first-choice option for Jürgen Klinsmann’s side. His excellent delivery and quality link-up play has seen him start alongside Son Heung-min (31-Tottenham) in recent A-League matches. With Hwang Eui-jo (31-Norwich City) suspended for illegal filming, Cho’s development has been a welcome relief for a squad that has been shaken up by an emergency.
